The Cretan Farmers Take their Protest to the Capital

The Cretan farmers that travelled to Piraeus were confronted at the port by the Greek Riot Police(MAT). Violent incidents between the police and the farmers erupted when the cretan farmers who boarded the ferry to Piraeus with 65 tractors and many farming pick-up trucks were met by the riot police at the harbour. During the fights, a female MP of PASOK, Mrs Maria Skrafnaki suffered minor injuries on her foot and was taken to hospital.

The deputee Ministers for Agricultural Development and Economics went to the port to meet the farmers representatives and discuss their demands. The meeting took place yesterday early evening in the Ministry for Shipping. A public announcement by dep. minister M. Papadopoulos at the end of the meeting said that the two deputee ministers had a constructive dialogue with the farmers representatives. He added that the farmers demands will be presented to the Minister Mr Chatzigakis and that the Ministry has answered all their questions. The farmers will decide their mobilisation tomorrow in Crete.
